A Christmas Paradox

Because Christmas isn’t about catching feelings
Grabbing at the air for that something you remember
All those songs sing of it
Their sounds are rung from the dampening cloth of it

The weight of change aches and drags
Calling you forward whilst dragging you back
But because Christmas isn’t about catching feelings,
I sit here in mine
We reminisce because maybe our childhood heart knew how to feel what was meant for us
Our hearts were not made for this world
Like clothes that don’t fit
Or socks used as gloves
Our hearts, they long for something more
Somehow we know we aren’t home
For now we are called to live in that tension
Our restless longing,
never satisfied by the glimpses of home
Oh my unsatisfied heart
Take comfort
You do not wait in vain
Because Christmas is about this hope,
Our ever near, in family here,
But ever not yet, home.
Because Christmas isn’t for reaching back,
But looking forward
Let us not lose the reminiscence of our childhood hope.
